“Club ICL” Instant Practice
"Club ICL" Instant Practice is a new online learning resource for ICL English students. The exercises provide listening practice at different levels, using songs and authentic news items based on general and specific topics such as Business English and Legal English topics. Students can monitor their own progress and receive feedback from ICL. It’s an interesting, efficient way of keeping your English up-to-date on a weekly basis, and we highly recommend it for the summer for those who are not doing a summer English course.

How to learn a foreign language
Here are some useful tips on how to learn a foreign language, taken from an interview with Gerry Sweeney from ESADE, published in La Vanguardia:
- Attend as many hours of class as possible
- Have realistic goals. Don´t be discouraged: Learning a language requires effort and perserverance
- Attending class is not enough. You have to study at home too (watch TV or read something in the language you are studying, doing language exercises on the internet...)
- Try to practise as often as you can, even with non-native speakers
At ICL we couldn´t agree more on these rules!

Did you know that there are more than 6000 languages in the world?
The Government of Catalonia has recently set up Casa de les llengües (The House of Languages), an institution which promotes languages as a vehicle of communication and the recognition of linguistic diversity and multilingualism. One of its members is the famous Welsh linguist David Crystal, who is the President of the International Scientific Committee of the institution. Crystal is the author of two highly renowned Cambridge University encyclopaedias, and in celebration of the International Year of Languages, he has spoken about multilingualism and intercultural dialogue at various conferences.

More information about the services offered by Casa de les llengües can be found at www.linguamon.cat. Included is a directory of language training centres, with In Company Languages featuring in the list. There are also various different multilingual features and glossaries that guarantee hours of fascinating topics to browse.

Learning by doing
With the Spanish general elections fast approaching, two ICL teachers decided to spice up their English lessons by involving their students in a political debate.
With one class taking the part of the socialist party and the other the populists, battle commenced on Tuesday morning. Each student had prepared a policy point and gave themselves an appropriate identity - with name tag to boot. What followed was a good-tempered, heated debate lasting an hour and a half with everyone taking part. The whole event was a great success, with teachers leaving feeling proud of their students and students leaving feeling proud of their newly acquired English debating skills. Credit must be given to the ICL teachers who led the whole affair with skill and flair; and to all the students who meticulously prepared their parts...To be continued...

ICL Top of the Class!
All of us here at ICL are delighted with the results of our survey of the opinions of our students for the 2008-9 course. Once again we have managed to maintain the upward trend in overall levels of student satisfaction.
The ICL co-ordinators visit all the classes during the course and speak to each student individually giving them an opportunity to give us their feedback on the course. The students complete a questionnaire about their course during the visit, they are asked to evaluate the teacher and teaching methods, the course material as well as the administrative aspects of the course.
As we look forward to the 2008-9 course we are analysing the results of our student feedback in order to continue offering the best service possible.

Barrio Gotico with an Irish Accent
ICL students joined our Irish tour guide Paddy on a walking tour of the Barrio Gotico in the heart of Barcelona – all in English, of course. The students were keen to contribute to the tour by exchanging anecdotes and different versions of local legends such as Saint Eulalia. They were also invited to visit an old-fashioned herboristería before marvelling at the various architectural styles and monuments hidden in the heart of the old city. The students all agreed that it was an evening well-spent.
